Introduction to EU/165/2014
EU/165/2014 establishes the requirements for Road Registration Devices (tachographs) used in commercial vehicles. The purpose of this regulation is to ensure the accurate recording of driving time, rest periods, vehicle speed, and driver activities in order to improve road transport safety and support compliance with driver working-time regulations.
Road Registration Device Requirements
This regulation defines the technical requirements for the design, construction, installation, and performance of Road Registration Devices. These devices must be capable of accurately recording and storing information related to driver activities and vehicle operation with a high level of reliability. In addition, they must provide protection against unauthorized manipulation and data tampering.
Testing and Evaluation Procedures
To verify compliance with EU/165/2014, a series of specialised tests and evaluations are performed on road registration devices. These assessments include the verification of data recording accuracy, functional performance, reliability, information security, and resistance to environmental conditions and unauthorised interference. The objective is to ensure consistent and reliable performance throughout the product’s service life.
The Role of Road Registration Devices in Transport Safety
Road registration devices play an important role in improving road transport safety. By recording and monitoring driving activities, these systems support compliance with driving and rest-time regulations and help reduce accidents caused by driver fatigue. They also contribute to greater transparency and improved fleet management.
