Seat and Anchorage Requirements in ECE R17
The ECE R17 standard specifies technical requirements for the design, construction, and performance of vehicle seats and their anchorage systems. Seats must provide sufficient strength and durability to withstand crash forces without detachment or hazardous deformation. In addition, seat anchorages must be designed to maintain a secure connection between the seat and the vehicle structure under all operating conditions.
Head Restraint Requirements
A significant part of ECE Regulation No. 17 is dedicated to the design and performance of head restraints. These requirements cover dimensions, installation position, height, width, and energy-absorbing characteristics of head restraints. The objective of these provisions is to reduce the risk of neck injuries and prevent whiplash-related trauma during vehicle collisions.
Vehicle Seat Strength Tests
To verify compliance with ECE R17, a series of specialized tests are conducted on vehicle seats and their anchorages. These tests include the evaluation of forward seat displacement, seatback strength, and the ability of the seat assembly to remain securely attached to the vehicle structure. The results demonstrate whether the seat can withstand forces encountered in real-world crash conditions.
Head Restraint Performance Tests
Head restraints are also subjected to dedicated testing procedures to assess their effectiveness in protecting vehicle occupants' heads and necks. These tests evaluate head restraint performance under various conditions and determine compliance with the safety requirements specified in ECE Regulation No. 17.
